Following the research of a Spanish Atlantologist of today about the origin of the name:

The eminent Spanish philologist Don Joaquin Vallvé, in his erudite work "The Territorial Division of Muslim Spain", exposes very solid tests that the Arab expression "Yazîrat al-Andalus" , "island of al-Andalus" (used by the first Arab authors to talk about the Southwest of the Iberian Peninsula) is a pure translation of "isla of the Atlantic" or "Isla Atlantis". Therefore, for the Arabs the present region of Andalusia, Spain, was rest of the Island or peninsula of Atlantis.

Following the tradition Greek, the Arabs also called "Yazirah" (island) to peninsulas. In Arab also the alternative expression "Yazirat al-Atlasi" has been used, that is, "Island of Atlas or Atlantis".

The Muslim texts that offer the first news on the "Island of al-Andalus" and the "Sea of al-Andalus", are extraordinarily clarified if we replace the expressions, "Yazîrat al-Andalus", and "Yazirat al-Atlasi", by "island or peninsula of Atlantis" or "island of the Atlanteans".

The same we can say on myths of Hercules and the Amazon, whose island, according to the Muslim commentators of these legend grecolatinas, was located in the "Yauf al-Andalus", which is possible to interpret like in the interior of the "Sea of Andalusia" or "Atlantic Gulf". The same Gulf that exists between Spain and Morocco. The same site where I affirm finds of the submerged rest of the Acropolis and the main cities of Atlantis.
